This might be just one of the best albums of the 70's - at the very least, it's one of the most touching. The parts that really get to me are the songs where it's just Jackson drenching the surroundings in that beautiful echoey classic Rhodes tremolo, making everything seem sweet and uneasy at the same time, while Gil delivers lyrics that are half prayer and half love song, in a voice I can only describe as 'honest-sounding'. Sad hopefulness or hopeful sadness?
Whatever it is, it's painfully intimate. The whole album is such an experience. That having been said, does anyone know of a good CD reissue of it? The one I recently bought (SNAF833CD from Charly Records) has quite a bit of hiss on it, and I'm sure that there must be better-sounding versions out there.
Winter in America is the sound of Gill Scott-Heron toning down some of the fire in favour of more soulful pastures (with the help of Brian Jackson). The words, of course, are as sharp as ever and 'The Bottle' is simply an out and out amazing song.
