Wilson Audio is known in the audiophile community as offering some of the most expensive speaker designs in existence. When Wilson Audio first began offering its products in the early 1980s, the highest priced small “monitor” speaker was $1,600 per pair. Wilson’s small WATT speaker was introduced at $4,400 per pair. The most inexpensive stereo speaker from Wilson Audio, the bookshelf-sized Duette, sells for about $10,000 US per pair, while home theater “Watch” center and rear channel speakers cost over $5,500. Their most expensive stereo speakers, the Alexandria X-2 Series 2, sell for $158,000 MSRP per pair and up, depending on finish. From the time he started building loudspeakers in his garage, Dave Wilson had one motivating passion: to make the reproduction of music sound as much like the real thing as possible.
Size, weight, and manufacturing complexity are all of little consequence when the task at hand is to make a loudspeaker that outperforms the Series 2 Alexandria in every significant measure, and brings the listener an unmistakable step closer to the exhilaration of a live musical event. Dave Wilson is unapologetic about using his ears as a design tool because while fidelity of the live event may be difficult to measure, it is not difficult for even the casual listener to hear. But when listening becomes rigorous and disciplined—that is to say, empirical—it can bear even greater benefits. Alexx is the fourth all-new loudspeaker from Wilson Audio in as many years.
It may be intuitive to assume the Alexx replaces the venerable MAXX, in that it is Wilson’s latest entry into the large speaker segment just below the Alexandria, but, in reality, the comparison with the MAXX begins and ends there. Instead, the Alexx is an altogether more complex and sophisticated loudspeaker. Alexx incorporates Wilson’s latest thinking on loudspeaker design in the areas of time-domain geometry, driver configuration, and driver development. It is the latest beneficiary of Wilson’s ongoing analysis of low-resonance cabinet strategies via laser micrometer. Alexx draws from both recent designs such as the Alexia and the Sabrina, as well as the WAMM—Dave Wilson’s up and coming Magnum Opus—with which it was developed concurrently. The quest to achieve the performance of the larger Wilson loudspeakers in a more compact enclosure began over two years ago.
With a footprint scarcely larger than a Sasha, and musicality to rival the XLF, Alexia sets a new standard for ultra-high performance in a compact full range loudspeaker. For WATT/Puppy and Sasha owners, this added dimension of performance has only been available by trading up to the MAXX Series 3 or the Alexandrias—a choice often rendered impractical by room size. Now, those constrained by their listening environments who crave the next level of musical realism have a new answer in the Alexia. The musicality of the big Wilson speakers is due in no small part to their unrivaled ability to time-align the leading edge of waveforms from each driver for any specified listening position and ear height.

The Yvette may also invite comparison to Wilson’s cult favorite, the Sophia. Again, this makes sense. The new Yvette draws from this rich tradition. But, perhaps more importantly, it derives its core technology directly from the enormous research-and-development reservoir of what is perhaps Wilson’s most prolific era of innovation to date. The benchmark in designing Thor’s Hammer was simple: create a subwoofer that would be, in every measure, a worthy addition to a music system built around Wilson’s flagship loudspeaker, the Alexandria® X-2 Series 2—no easy task since the X-2 extends comfortably below 20 Hz. That meant primarily two things: First, the subwoofer had to perform with the same alacrity and dynamic range as the Alexandria.
Slow, muddy, or distorted bass, no matter how subterranean, wouldn’t suffice. Secondly, it was critical that the Hammer not create out-of-band distortion that would rob the X-2 of its singular glory, which is—arguably—the most revelatory and seductive midrange in the world.
