Amercan Arms is an importer and declared bankruptcy several years ago during a class action lawsuit over quality problems with this particular model. The company was bought by Tri-Star. I had an Italian Silver II which which had several parts break and had problems getting it fixed. My normal gunsmiths refused to work on it and I finally found someone to fix it. Several companies made the Silver series, at least two in Italy (the one that made mine and the one involved in the lawsuit) and one in Spain (a buddy's father has one). I am not a fan of them and would only buy one if it was inexpensive enough to be considered a 'throw away' if something went wrong. Spanish made, I believe it would be mid-80's or earlier.
My buddy's dad bought his new in 1980. I am leery of some imports, many have a firearm made to meet a certain price and the availability of parts can be very uncertain due to the uncertainty of maker and product support. AA is one of these, the nearest listed repair facility would not work on mine as they were the authorized repair facility for a different maker of AA arms, not my guns maker. The only listed authorized repair facility that would work on mine was half way across the country and all told would have cost me nearly $250 to have the gun shipped, insured, and repaired. This was for a $400 dollar gun. Not worth it in my eyes.

As I am not fond of AA by any means, you can take my opinion with a bag of salt. My best guess is AA may have changed maufacturers again just before or while they were in bankrutcy proceedings. That was right about 2000.
The first Tri-Stars I saw were Spanish made and had their name on them so this may be the case. Learn something new everyday. AA was good at keeping the guns looking similar, if not identical. The two different manufacturers that made the Silver II during the late 80's and 90's had identical looking guns. I want to say the silver 'sideplates' were actually brazed, welded, or glued to the gun and not a plating as I seem to recall a thin line on the underside of the reciever where the side and bottom plates meet up. I may be thinking of another 'inexpensive' gun I owned so don't quote me.
I got rid of mine in 2001 and had not touched it for about 3 years before that so my memory may be faulty. The model numbers don't help me, I never knew what mine were, just that it was a Silver II.
